Mesothelioma Prognosis

The prognosis for mesothelioma is poor, with most patients living less than 1 year. The type of mesothelioma, stage of the cancer, and patient health are the three most important factors used to determine prognosis. Mesothelioma prognosis can be improved by receiving treatment as soon as possible and leading a healthy lifestyle.

Malignant mesothelioma is extremely aggressive and has a long latency period, which means it usually remains undetected until the cancer has reached an advanced stage. Mesothelioma cannot be cured. However, the prognosis for mesothelioma has been slowly improving over the years. This improvement in prognosis is due to the development of experimental treatments, new detection and diagnostic methods, and other areas of research in clinical trials.

Defining Terms

Prognosis

How a disease will progress. A prognosis can be good or bad, and may include a life expectancy estimate

Life Expectancy

How long a patient can expect to survive. This may change with treatment and other developments.

Survival Rate

A statistic (percentage or ratio) indicating how many people live a certain amount of time after diagnosis

Read Survivor Stories

Although mesothelioma has a poor prognosis, there is still hope. Many mesothelioma survivors have become advocates who share their stories to let others know that treatment can work. Read the stories of mesothelioma survivors today.

What Factors Affect Mesothelioma Prognosis?

There are five primary factors that doctors consider when determining a prognosis for mesothelioma patients.

Location

Peritoneal mesothelioma (in the abdomen) has a slightly better prognosis than pleural mesothelioma (in the lungs). Pericardial mesothelioma (in the heart) has a very poor prognosis.

Cell Type

Of the three primary cell types of mesothelioma, epithelioid mesothelioma is the most common and also has a better prognosis than sarcomatoid or biphasic mesothelioma.

Stage

Mesothelioma patients diagnosed at an early stage will have a better prognosis than those diagnosed at a later stage. By Stage III and Stage IV, generally only palliative treatments are given to relieve pain and discomfort.

Metastasis

If the mesothelioma has spread to other parts of the body from where it originated (i.e., metastasized), the prognosis is much worse. Once the disease begins to spread, it is much harder to remove the cancer through surgery or kill it with chemotherapy.

Overall Health

Patients who are relatively young and healthy will have a better prognosis, because their bodies are better able to handle the treatments. Older patients also tend to have other conditions that can exacerbate the disease or limit treatment options.

Prognosis by Mesothelioma Type

The type of mesothelioma, which is determined by the location where it first develops, can have a big effect on the prognosis of the disease.

Pleural Mesothelioma

On average, patients who receive some form of treatment live between six and twelve months after diagnosis. Some treatments have been linked to slightly longer survival times, such as chemotherapy using pemetrexed (Alimta®) and Cisplatin.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

The average survival period for patients with peritoneal mesothelioma is 1 year. However, patients who are healthy enough to undergo surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) have a much higher average length of survival, with as many as half living more than five years.

Pericardial Mesothelioma

In most cases, pericardial mesothelioma is not even diagnosed until an autopsy is performed. For patients who are diagnosed while still alive, pericardial mesothelioma presents an extremely poor prognosis.

Improving a Mesothelioma Prognosis

In recent years, research has helped to discover and develop new and more effective treatments for mesothelioma, which has done a lot to improve prognosis. However, advancements have been slow and incremental at best.

Improving Prognosis Before Diagnosis

Perhaps the best way to improve prognosis is to catch mesothelioma early. By using blood tests to identify certain biomarkers – that is, high levels of specific substances in the blood – researchers have had some success at finding new ways to detect mesothelioma early.

The first thing individuals can do is to understand the relationship between mesothelioma and asbestos. If you have been exposed to asbestos in the past and experience any symptoms of mesothelioma, you should talk to your doctor right away.

Improving Prognosis After Diagnosis

After a mesothelioma diagnosis, improving prognosis depends on the cell type, location, and metastasis of the tumors, as well as the patient’s age, sex, and overall health.

While some of these factors are unchangeable, you can certainly make sure you eat right and exercise regularly. Engaging in holistic practices such as meditation, massage, and yoga can also help alleviate mental and physical stresses, which may improve prognosis as well.

Some treatments have been shown to be more effective than others as well. For example, surgery coupled with HIPEC has been demonstrated to significantly improve the prognosis for some patients with peritoneal mesothelioma. Patients with unresectable tumors (i.e., they can’t be removed through surgery) may benefit from a chemotherapy treatment of pemetrexed, cisplatin, and bevacizumab.

Finally, in some cases, clinical trials can provide a final hope for improving prognosis in some patients. These trials are established as research venues for experimental treatments like immunotherapy, gene therapy, and photodynamic therapy, which offer promising results.

Mesothelioma Prognosis and Treatment Costs

Mesothelioma treatment costs can be significant, regardless of a patient’s prognosis. Some insurance companies may not cover the costs of diagnostic tests, clinical trials, or other experimental therapies. In many cases, there are related costs such as travel, lost wages, and secondary conditions that need to be paid for, as well.

Drug Addiction Treatment in the United States

Treatment for drug abuse and addiction is delivered in many different settings, using a variety of behavioral and pharmacological approaches.

Drug addiction is a complex disorder that can involve virtually every aspect of an individual's functioning—in the family, at work and school, and in the community.

Because of addiction's complexity and pervasive consequences, drug addiction treatment typically must involve many components. Some of those components focus directly on the individual's drug use; others, like employment training, focus on restoring the addicted individual to productive membership in the family and society (See diagram "Components of Comprehensive Drug Abuse Treatment"), enabling him or her to experience the rewards associated with abstinence.

Treatment for drug abuse and addiction is delivered in many different settings using a variety of behavioral and pharmacological approaches. In the United States, more than 14,500 specialized drug treatment facilities provide counseling, behavioral therapy, medication, case management, and other types of services to persons with substance use disorders.

Along with specialized drug treatment facilities, drug abuse and addiction are treated in physicians' offices and mental health clinics by a variety of providers, including counselors, physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, and social workers. Treatment is delivered in outpatient, inpatient, and residential settings. Although specific treatment approaches often are associated with particular treatment settings, a variety of therapeutic interventions or services can be included in any given setting.

Because drug abuse and addiction are major public health problems, a large portion of drug treatment is funded by local, State, and Federal governments. Private and employer-subsidized health plans also may provide coverage for treatment of addiction and its medical consequences. Unfortunately, managed care has resulted in shorter average stays, while a historical lack of or insufficient coverage for substance abuse treatment has curtailed the number of operational programs. The recent passage of parity for insurance coverage of mental health and substance abuse problems will hopefully improve this state of affairs. Health Care Reform (i.e., the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, "ACA") also stands to increase the demand for drug abuse treatment services and presents an opportunity to study how innovations in service delivery, organization, and financing can improve access to and use of them.

How Much Does Remote IT Support (Help Desk) Cost?

With all of the advances in remote access, the IT industry has reached the point where roughly 95% of all network management and support can be performed from afar. From server patching, to helpdesk services, to firmware updates for your firewall, all it takes are some keystrokes from an engineer and you’re golden.

While it isn’t best practice to have purely remote support across the board (on-site really is crucial to a comprehensive IT service plan), it’s these kinds of services that are the essence of what the IT industry calls “managed services.” As such, over the years we’ve gotten tons of questions about what it will cost an organization to subscribe to a steady diet of remote IT support.

What are the different types of remote support out there, and how much will each of them run you each month? We’ll break it down below.

What kinds of remote IT support are there?

The two most prevalent kinds of remote IT support focus on the core elements of your technology systems: servers and workstations.

1. Remote server maintenance. This service typically includes monitoring, alert generation, scanning for health statistics, and patch application. Higher-level offerings will also include performance optimization, and remediation of any issues that arise.

2. Remote desktop management/help desk. Here, you’re looking at base packages that consist of anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-spam, remote access capabilities, and remote remediation of desktop issues. Some higher-end providers extend their support window to “24/7,” and others provide application-specific support that borders on training.

In some cases, you’ll see providers separate their workstation management service from their helpdesk support (take one Optimal Networks for example). Generally speaking, though, these two services are halves of the whole.

What is the average price range for remote IT support?

For remote server maintenance, expect to pay anywhere between $100 to $395 per server per month. The more features you want to be handled remotely (especially where issue remediation is concerned, unlimited or otherwise), the more you’ll need to invest.

For helpdesk, you’ll find packages ranging on average from $60 to $85 per workstation per month, with the higher-cost options generally including 24/7 user support.

In a lot of cases, smaller providers will fall on the lower end of the pricing scale in order to stay competitive. The only thing to watch out for here is that the smaller the company, the fewer people they have at their disposal to help you when you need them.

As always, do take care to vet your providers before signing on (remember: there’s no equivalent to the bar exam in IT). And, wherever possible, try to balance out your remote service with regular on-site attention—just because you can go fully remote doesn’t mean you should.

How Cloud Computing is Revolutionizing Healthcare?

Cloud technology is widely adopted by healthcare organizations worldwide. During the past few years, healthcare industries have realized the potential of cloud computing and how it can help them give quality services to patients. The cloud technology has accelerated the way healthcare industry can use or share information across a network.

But to think of it, will cloud computing affect all healthcare areas? According to expert analysis, “YES”, cloud technology will affect all health care areas in the nearest future.

Healthcare sector has been moved to digital platform today where it collects plenty of data. The most popular IT Companies do offer cloud computing services that mainly focused on healthcare data to transform it into meaningful information. Further, it makes data sharing easy and more accessible for the users.

With cloud solutions, it is possible to share large data files with the convenience that not only saves overall healthcare costs but boosts efficiency too. Healthcare industries need to be agile to adapt the changes in higher rates and affordable costs that could be made possible with cloud technology only.

When you have to reach or manage millions of customers then you need a more powerful system to get the work done, and patient data also need to be shared securely with healthcare providers. Latest EMR systems have better control over healthcare data and it has become the first priority for hospitals to adopt these systems within the industry.

Healthcare regulations are pushing the industry to move towards better storage, collaboration and data sharing in the cloud. With electronic medical records (EMR systems), there are chances of data loss or other sensitive information loss. The only solution is to use cloud services with EMR systems to address the problem. This process will not only secure data but also makes data transfer faster between parties. The only responsibility of healthcare providers is to define the security responsibilities between cloud vendors and tenants.

Entering to the Cloud World

Nowadays, most of the healthcare industries have effectively adopted cloud solutions and those who have not, are in a hurry to adopt the same keeping in view its benefits. We are living in an era where everything is managed or regulated by technology. So, how can healthcare sector remain behind in this?

Let’s understand how cloud technology has become a vital tool for the healthcare industry and why it is considered highly valuable for healthcare professionals.

Cloud has become a vital tool in the healthcare field for better collaboration. It allows easy storage and remote access of healthcare data to professionals. Now better care can be delivered by healthcare experts around us without any delay. Further, there is a remote conferencing facility that updates a patient’s condition within minutes and saves overall travelling time for doctors.

Excellent reach in tough times

In case of disaster, when this is not possible to visit any particular place then cloud technology represents doctors with necessary information they need at that particular time. Now on-duty doctors with little surgery experience can get real-time guidance through information transmission systems to make sure an excellent work is done by the team.

Better and safe storage

Cloud makes it possible to hold a maximum of data at small costs only. In this way, cloud doesn’t just make data storage safe but adorable for healthcare providers.

Information transformation for informed decisions

In the medical field, you must have heard about big data storage. Hospitals have to store a massive amount of data daily and this is necessary to make data analysis carefully for more informed decisions. With cloud, data can be analyzed carefully for meaningful insights and there is always less room for errors during treatment.

Improved research

Cloud speed up the research process by quick sharing of big data on servers. It allows safe exchange of data between two parties and also transforms data into meaningful information to make valuable decision in future. It helps medical professionals to get an advance image on the topic that improves the overall quality of care and helps in curing diseases faster.

2017 Hyundai Sonata

Buyer's Guide

Buyers looking for spacious, practical family-friendly choices have more choice than ever. Compact cars and small crossovers - which are now larger and more useful than ever - have eaten away at the midsize segment's market share. Nonetheless, the well-equipped, handsomely styled Hyundai Sonata remains an excellent choice with much to offer buyers.

For 2017, changes to the Sonata are limited. Key changes include new upholstery colours - black cloth and black leather instead of grey cloth and grey leather - plus the availability of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration on certain trims. Adaptive cornering headlamps are also available, but only on the top-of-the-line Limited and Ultimate trims. Last but not least, there's a new shade of red - Firey Red, which replaces Venetian Red.

All but a handful of Sonatas come equipped with a 2.4-litre direct-injected four-cylinder engine that produces 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. It comes paired to a six-speed automatic transmission and receives Hyundai's Drive Mode Select, which adjusts the throttle response, steering weight, and shift points for the transmission. City fuel economy ranges between 9.4 - 10.0 L/100 km, while highway fuel economy is between 6.5 - 7.0 L/100 km.

A 2.0-litre turbocharged motor is also available but is limited to the top-of-the-line Ultimate trim level. It generates 245 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. It also uses a six-speed automatic. The 2.0T is rated at 10.4 L/100 km city and 7.4 L/100 km highway.

The Sonata is also available in fuel-saving Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid forms. They are covered in depth in a separate review.

Trim levels for the Sonata include GL, GLS, Sport Tech, Limited, and Ultimate 2.0T.

The GL comes standard with all the basics - power windows, remote power locks, cruise control, Bluetooth, six-way adjustable driver's seat, heated seats, and a 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display with reverse camera, Bluetooth, and USB port. Despite its position at the bottom of the Sonata range, the GL doesn't look like a bare-bones model; standard LED daytime running lights, a rear spoiler, and 16-inch alloy wheels add a bit of flair.

The GLS adds premium features which most Canadians are sure to appreciate, including a standard heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated rear seats, and proximity key with push-button start and hands-free Smart Trunk power trunklid. The GLS also gets a power sunroof, chromed door handles, mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, an eight-way power adjustable driver's seat, rear parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

While the Sport Tech trim doesn't get any additional power, this next-step up model adds sporty looking 17-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust tips, wiper de-icer, LED tail lights, panoramic sunroof, and an upgraded audio system that includes a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen system with navigation, Dimension-branded speakers, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Inside, the Sport Tech also gains sports seats with cloth inserts and leatherette bolsters.

The Limited trim level provides a ride in the lap of luxury with leather upholstery, leatherette door card inserts, power front passenger seat, ventilated front seats, driver memory, aluminum scuff plates, rear side window shades, electronic parking brake, and a nine-speaker Infinity-branded sound system. The Limited also features Hyundai's latest active safety features including bi-xenon headlamps with automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control with stop and go capability, emergency autonomous braking, and lane-departure warning.

The Ultimate 2.0T backs its added punch with a sport-tuned suspension system, 18-inch alloy wheels, aluminum pedals, a flat-bottom steering wheel with paddles for manual shifting, sports seats with embossed Turbo logo, quad exhaust tips, a sports appearance package.

Pricing for the 2017 Hyundai Sonata starts at $24,799 and tops out at $36,249.

How To Self Learn Mobile App Development

The mobile application industry is huge and it’s growing by the day. In the past year, Apple has distributed over $10 billion to developers while over a billion Android devices were shipped. The total value of the mobile app industry is expected to grow to $77 billion by 2017. Just as how it was with the dot-com boom of the late ‘90s, those who were lucky enough to catch the mobile app wave in the early stages are most likely doing really well right now.

As for those who didn’t manage an early head start, many have considered making a career change and self-learning mobile app development to become a full-time mobile app-developing rockstar. You might think that it’s a bit late and that the mobile app market must be pretty saturated by now. However, the truth is that it’s never been a better time to be a mobile software engineer, a mobile app designer or an entrepreneur starting a mobile app business.

If you’re one of those prepared to put on the geeky glasses and get down to learning all about programming for mobile apps, it should come as a relief to know that the barrier to entry for mobile app development is relatively low. In fact, the one major obstacle cited by many who are on the quest to learn mobile app development is that it simply requires time and hard work. Just like learning any other skill or field of study.

Of course, you can always go back to college and study for a computer science degree. However, that takes a lot of time and money. To help you hack your way to becoming an app developer, we gathered some of the best online resources to self learn mobile app development. But before you begin the dive into the world of programming, it’s important that you understand and figure out the following questions:

1. Why do you want to learn mobile app development?

Man on MacBook working hard to learn mobile app development

Probably the best way to begin is to seriously ask yourself why you’re setting on this path now to learn mobile app development. The answer to this fundamental question will ultimately affect many of the important decisions that you’ll be making.

Could it be that programming is your true passion in life but you had decided upon on a different path earlier on in life? Or could it be that the opportunity was never presented to you when you were younger? Perhaps you were once discouraged to venture down this path as it happened to me? Maybe you’re just looking for a new challenge in life and life is telling you to learn mobile app development.

It’s important that you seek to truly understand why you want to learn mobile app development so as to better your chances for success.

2. Where exactly are you starting from?

If you’re web developer looking to learn mobile app development, there are several useful platforms that can help you to transition to mobile app development such as PhoneGap and Appcelerator Titanium.

Lines of code, from web development to mobile app development

PhoneGap essentially uses a mobile platform’s Web view to render content so the app is, in other words, a web app passing off as a native app. Developing an app in such a way is limited in terms of the app’s ability to access the device’s capabilities and to offer a UX that fits well with the native platform. Appcelerator Titanium on the other hand uses the platform’s native controls to render UI although you’d have to learn its API.

If you’re not involved in any kind of computer work but have some prior knowledge on what is object-oriented programming, it would help a fair bit as you would already understand how computing works.

However, if you’re an absolute beginner starting from zero, it’s probably best if you take up a short introductory class on computer science just to get a hang of the basics. You can find free courses online with MIT Open Courseware, Coursera, or edX, just to name a few of the more popular ones.

The next recommendation I’d make is not to start to learn mobile app development straight away but to take the time to think about a final project you’d like to work on while learning mobile app development and/or find a mentor.

If you decide to go with one of the courses that you’ll find in the list further along this article, many of them would include mini-projects to put your programming skills to practice. I’d suggest having your own little project as well that would be your motivation, your milestone evaluation, and your personal creation all at once.

The Next Steps to Learn Mobile App Development

It’s good to know what you’d be dealing before taking a leap. These days, mobile apps are built primarily for the iOS platform or the Android platform. One is distinctively different from the other and you should consider whether you want to specialize in iOS or Android mobile app development. Of course, there’s no stopping you from attempting to master the both but that’s not a common thing to do in the mobile app development world.

iOS

Learn mobile app development for iOS with a MacBook and iPhone

Developing for iOS means learning Objective-C or Swift, which brings us to the question that is often asked, “Should I start learning Objective-C or go straight to Swift?” The answer to that ultimately depends on the answer to the very first question we asked above: why do you want to learn mobile app development?

If you’re learning to develop apps so as to create your own products for the iOS app market, then go ahead and jump straight to learning Swift. If, however, you want to be an iOS developer working for a mobile app development company, you’d be better off starting with learning Objective-C.

That’s because Swift was introduced only in 2014 and while feedback on it has been generally very positive, there are still tens of thousands of iOS apps out there built with Objective-C and tons of documentation meant for Objective-C. As a professional iOS developer, you’d need to know how to maintain or fix the code.

Here are some good online courses (note that some of them do charge a fee):
  • CodeSchool Try Objective-C and Try iOS course

  • Stanford University Developing iOS7 Apps for iPhone and iPad (slightly outdated but free and still useful)

  • Treehouse iOS Development with Objective-C and iOS Development with Swift

  • Udemy Swift and iOS8 Apps in 31 Days

You’ll also find that Apple’s iOS Developer Library is very well-documented and rather comprehensive. It’s probably best to start with a course that breaks down the complexity of iOS development into digestible parts and once you have a good understand on the basics, to delve further into each component detailed in Apple’s resources for developers and in StackOverflow.

And once you’re getting really comfortable with developing apps for iOS, here are some great blogs on iOS development:
  • NSHipster

  • Ray Wenderlich

  • mikeash.com

  • iDevBlogs

Do take note that to be an iOS developer, you’d need a Mac. Also, testing devices would be costly as Apple products do carry a premium price tag. However, you might be consoled by the fact that Apple consumers do tend to spend a lot more on apps.

Android

Learn mobile app development for Android

Should your choice platform be Android, make sure that you’re aware of the one concern of Android developers: there are many, many, and I mean many, different types of Android devices out there, which complicates things a little. However, it’s not an issue if you perceive it more as a challenge and a potential to reach a wider audience.

Learning to develop apps for Android requires knowledge of Java. If an image of aromatic Indonesian coffee is the only thing that comes to mind, you probably need an introductory class to Java the programming language.
  • Programming by Doing (for Java)

  • Vogella Java Tutorials (for Java beginners)

  • Coursera Creative, Serious, and Playful Science of Android Apps (part of the Android Development track)

  • Udacity Developing Android Apps

  • Google’s Training for Android Developers

Not surprisingly, Google’s Android Developer Library is also extensive and well-documented.

Once you’re comfortably dreaming of electric sheep, here are some resources for Android development that you might want to check out:
  • Codepath Android Cliffnotes

  • tuts+ Android Tutorials

  • Cyril Mottier’s blog

  • Android Weekly Newsletter

Now that you’re ready to learn mobile app development and to become the next mobile app developer guru, do keep in mind that mobile app development isn’t just programming. Knowing how to write code to build an app is simply the beginning. Best practices, such as writing clean code and documentation, would come next as well as learning how to promote and monetize your mobile apps.

If you’re a designer who loves to get hands on with creating prototypes without having to learn mobile app development, we have the right tool for you. Proto.io is a mobile prototyping tool that allows you to create fully-interactive, code-free prototypes to showcase your creative ideas. Start a free trial today.

Cheapest Car Insurance Companies Portland, Oregon

In Portland, we found that Progressive offered the cheapest auto insurance rates of the 12 companies we surveyed. While the Portland city average was $1,553 per year for our sample driver, Progressive was a full $633 less expensive, at $920 per year. Country was not far behind, with an average quote of $924 per year for our 30 year old man.

We used a single 30 year old male owner of a Toyota Camry to get our rates. It is likely your own rates will be different, reflecting your own driving history, age, marital status, the type of car you drive, and much more. To see which company will have the best rates for you, we recommend you compare quotes from at least three companies. To start you can put your zip code up top for a list of companies to start.

Cost of Car Insurance in Portland: by Neighborhood

Depending on where you live in Portland, your rates may be more expensive than the city average. We looked specifically at six major Portland neighborhoods to see how their pricing changed. Downtown Portland, as well neighborhoods on the west side of the river tended to be more pricey than those on the east side.

NeighborhoodAverage Annual Car Insurance Rate
Downtown$1,607
Northwest District$1,620
Southwest Portland$1,652
Pearl$1,680
Boise$1,686
East Portland$1,730

To ensure you get the best price in any area, it is crucial you compare quotes from multiple auto insurance companies.

Best Auto Insurance Companies in Portland

The best car insurance in the City of Roses will depend on the driver's backgrounds, and what they are looking for. If you value customer satisfaction over price, the best company for you will be different than someone who is just looking for basic minimum car insurance. Below you can see a brief summary of what some companies are best for.

According to the 2016 J.D Power Study of northwestern auto insurance companies, GEICO was the best for claims handling of companies we surveyed for quotes. GEICO scored 4/5 stars for claims handling, placing behind USAA, whom we discuss more below, which had 5/5 stars. GEICO was the fourth least expensive company we found in Portland for our sample driver, though it was less than $100 more expensive than Progressive. Depending on your circumstances, GEICO may end up being the cheapest auto insurer for you and thus the best overall.

As it proved for our sample 30 year old Portland driver however, Progressive was the most affordable insurer. Progressive scores significantly lower for claims handling than GEICO however (2/5 stars), so that is something to be wary of. Progressive may be the top choice if you want to get auto insurance as fast as you can. Progressive allows you to complete your insurance purchase directly online without needing to talk to an agent so the whole process is relatively fast. Just be sure Progressive is your cheapest option if you're looking to save on rates, since GEICO would be just as quick as Progressive in most cases.

Home to a Coast Guard, an Air National Guard, and a Marines Engineer Corp, military personnel and those related to them in Portland may be eligible for USAA. This company ranks as the best insurer for military personnel. As we mention above, USAA scores a perfect 5/5 when it comes to claims handling. USAA also offers great discounts for deployed members on top of other military exclusive discounts.

Fatal Accidents in Portland

Portland had 156 fatal accidents between 2011 and 2015, a number fewer than most other cities of similar size. In terms of the state of Oregon however, Portland accounted for nearly 25% of all traffic fatalities.

Most Dangerous Roads in Portland

US-26 had shared the highest amount of fatal traffic accidents in the City of Roses, though no road in the city was significantly more dangerous than another.

RankHighwayNumber of Fatal Accidents (2011 - 2015)Percent That Involve Drunk Driver
1US-26 (ODOT 26)1241.6%
2SE DIVISION ST922.2%
3SR-213 (ODOT 68)70%
4US-30BY (ODOT 123)728.5%
5NE MARINE DR771.4%

Drunk drivers accounted for 41.7% of fatal accidents in Portland which was higher than much larger cities like Houston, San Antonio and Los Angeles where drunk drivers accounted for around 30 to 35% of fatal accidents. The majority of fatal accidents on NE Marine Dr involved drunk driving.

Minimum Car Insurance Requirements in Portland, Oregon

Oregon has relatively comprehensive car insurance requirements compared to most other states, requiring liability insurance, uninsured motorist protection as well as personal injury protection. Below you can see the full breakdown:

  • $25,000 of Bodily Injury Liability per Person

  • $50,000 of Bodily Injury Liability per Accident

  • $20,000 of Property Damage Liability

  • $25,000 of Uninsured Motorist Insurance per Person

  • $50,000 of Uninsured Motorist Insurance per Accident

  • $15,000 of Personal Injury Protection

While the coverage is encompassing, the liability portion is likely to small for most drivers. We always recommend drivers get limits that equal the total amount of their assets. If your car is worth over $3,000 or less than 10 years old, we also strongly recommend you add comprehensive and collision insurance as well.

How We Compared Quotes

We collected quotes from different insurance companies across 59 towns and cities in the state of Oregon. Our sample driver was a 30 year old male who drove a Toyota Camry. To obtain quotes, we kept parameters for getting coverage the same, such as that he was single, had a good credit score and a clean driving record. The only parameter that changed was the zip code where he lived in Oregon - in this case, Portland. The amount of coverage we opted for gave our driver bit more than what is required of state minimums.

The Best Cash Back Credit Cards for Every Category – 3% and More in 2017

The editorial content on this page is not provided by any financial institution and has not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by any of these entities.

MagnifyMoney keeps a database of over 2,000 credit cards and their features, including cash back cards you can compare with our tool. We used it to find the absolute highest cash back rewards you can earn in each category, more than the standard 1-2% you usually see.

If you’re ready for cash back there are over 25 categories where you can earn 3% or more in pure cash back on your credit card purchases.

Scroll down and you’ll find links to the best cash back credit cards we’ve found that earn more than 2% cash back in special categories. These are cards that let you get pure cash value, not complicated points that can be used only for travel.

Before you dig into categories, every cash rewards wallet should have one of these cards, with double cash back on everything you spend:

Citi® Double Cash Card (a MasterCard that earns 1% + 1% – No annual fee, no limits)
Fidelity Investment Rewards Visa (which earns 2% – No annual fee, no limits)
Alliant Visa Signature Card (2.5% cash back, no limits, $59 annual fee after the first year – good if you spend $1,000 or more a month)

Once you have one of these, you can add other cards that earn more than 2% in special categories to really boost your cash rewards.

The best cash back credit cards with no limit rewards
Maybe you don’t want to mess with rotating categories or remembering limits on cash back. If that’s you, there are only a handful of cards that you need to carry to get the most in totally unlimited cash back.

As you’ll learn below, you may be leaving about $500 a year or more on the table by not holding at least some of these cards.

They are all no annual fee cards, and they ensure you will earn more than 2% cash back on your total spending with absolutely no limits. Some cards have higher cash back rates with limits, and you can see those below this list in our review of cards for each category

Airfare: PenFed Premium Travel Rewards – 4.25%

This card advertises 5x points on airfare, but there is a bit of a catch. When you redeem the points it earns for the closest thing to cash, a prepaid Visa card, your points are worth about 0.8 cents each, so that 5x points is really about 4.25% cash back on your airfare spending.

Travel: AAA Member Rewards Visa – 3%

While the PenFed Premium Travel Rewards wins for airfare spending, the AAA Member Rewards Visa offers 3% back on airfare, plus all kinds of travel, including hotels, car rentals, and cruises. You don’t have to be a AAA member to get the card.

Supermarkets: PenFed Platinum Rewards – 2.55%

The card earns 3x points on supermarkets, but the points are worth about 0.85 cents each when you redeem them for a prepaid Visa gift card, so the real unlimited cash back rate is about 2.55%.

If you spend less than $6,000 a year ($500 a month) on groceries, then the Amex Blue Cash Preferred offers 6% back on the first $6,000 each year. The $95 annual fee on this card is a better deal vs the PenFed Card if you spend about $3,000 a year in groceries (about $250 a month).

Note that if you live in California, you may earn 3% unlimited cash back on groceries with the Platinum Rewards card from Golden 1 Credit Union.

Gas: Fort Knox Credit Union Platinum Visa – 5%

You might not have heard of this credit union, but anyone can join. You just need to pay $5 to join the American Consumer Council / Kentucky and you’re eligible.

The Sam’s Club MasterCard also offers 5% at the pump on up to $6,000 worth of gas purchases a year at any gas station, plus 3% on travel and dining, but you need to be a Sam’s Club member to hold the card.

Dining: Chase AARP Visa – 3%

You don’t have to be 55+ to hold this card, it’s available to anyone who is interested and meets the credit standards. So you can enjoy your ‘senior discount’ on dining any time. Capital One also offers a Premier Dining Rewards card with 3% back on dining and 2% on groceries.

(The information related to the AARP Visa and Chase Ink Cash Business credit cards has been collected by MagnifyMoney and has not been reviewed or provided by the issuer of these cards.)

Everything else: Citi Double Cash (up to  1% + 1%) or Fidelity Investment Rewards Visa(2%)

If you’re willing to pay an annual fee, the Alliant Visa Signature card earns 2.5% cash back unlimited. The $59 fee is worthwhile if you spend over $1,000 a month on the card. Alliant is targeting this card to people with high income who spend $10,000 or more a month, so it might be tough to get approved.

If you have a military affiliation, USAA offers some members the USAA Limitless cash back card, with 2.5% unlimited cash back if you make $1,000 a month in direct deposits to USAA. This card is only targeted to select members, so you won’t see it advertised on their website and no guarantees you will be offered the card.

Or if you live in California, the JCB Marukai Premium card gives you 3% cash back on all purchases beyond $3,000 in yearly spending.

Just mark each of the cards you pick in your wallet with a sticker for each category so you remember which to use, and you’ll rack up lots of cash with minimal hassle. And afraid to have more than one card? Well if you’re responsible with credit, a few additional inquiries might have less of an impact than you think. See our experience with scores and getting several cards for the rewards.

For unlimited retailer-specific discounts, also consider:
  • Amazon Prime Store Card – 5% – Amazon.com

  • Target REDcard – 5% – Target

If you want to maximize absolutely everything, read on…

We’ve organized cash back cards for each of the over 25 spending categories that are currently eligible for more than 2% in cash back rewards.

They include both year round and quarterly rotating categories like those on the Discover It. Pick the categories that matter most to you, and you’ll see the opportunities you have to earn 3-5% if you’re willing to keep track of some limits and quarterly changes.

Remember, these are all cards that let you earn cash value rewards, with no restriction on where you spend the rewards, unlike travel points.

You’ll find three flavors of cash back rewards, in the order of hassle factor:
  • Unlimited cash back – This is the simplest form. You usually won’t find the very highest 5%+ rewards this way, but we’ve found some great cards that get you 3% or more in some popular categories.

  • Cash back with limits – This is where a card limits the cash back you earn by putting a cap on the spending which earns the cash back in the specific category, on a combination of categories, or the card as a whole.

  • Quarterly rotating categories – These are the cards with the big headline 5% rates. Don’t be fooled. While you can earn the 5% rate, you may have to opt in to categories each quarter manually and be hit with caps on how much you can earn.
