Our Program
This one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program prepares students for careers requiring specialized technical knowledge to support corporate use of Business Intelligence (BI). Students develop technical and team skills to work independently and collaboratively to collect, analyze, design, build, support, integrate and manage systems that assist business decision making through data analysis using IBM Cognos Enterprise software to access complex databases and data warehouses.
Students install, configure and troubleshoot BI platforms. Hands-on experience is provided in database design, database administration, operating systems fundamentals, networking essentials and programming basics. Students research and evaluate current BI offerings and industry trends. In Level 01, courses focus on helping students understand and develop core competencies in the essential technologies utilized in delivering BI/BA solutions. The courses in Level 02 focus on assisting students to understand and develop hands-on experience using the designated IBM Cognos software. Examples of hands-on activities include writing complex SQL aggregation queries, creating data warehouses, developing multidimensional models, creating metadata frameworks and provisioning a variety of reporting styles. Projects provide students with experiential learning opportunities where they are tasked to address real-world problem solving situations and delivering business responsive solutions within tight timelines utilizing an agile-inspired approach.
This program offers one cooperative education (Co-op) Work Term(s) option. Qualified students with a minimum GPA of 2.7, have the opportunity to apply for paid co-op employment to gain valuable work experience and networks within industry. *See Additional Information for more details.
Graduates may find employment in a broad spectrum of positions within private and public sector organizations, departments, branches or business units that recognize the value of timely analysis of enterprise-relevant data in driving operational effectiveness and efficiencies, influencing tactical direction and priorities and enabling strategic advantage or enhanced service delivery. These positions may include: BI requirement analysts, BI report authors, BI meta-data modellers, BI server administrators, data warehouse planners, and other related opportunities requiring a technical understanding of BI provisioning in order to deliver business reporting and planning solutions.
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD): Students are expected to have and use a laptop or mobile computing device when registered in this on-campus program. Hardware and software specifications required by your program are outlined at http://algonquincollege.com/byod . Mobile devices/laptops and supplies can be purchased directly from Algonquin`s New Technology Store at educational rates. This requirement is crucial as students will use their mobile device to download, install, configure and use various enterprise-class software, starting in the first week of class.

Graduates may find a variety of employment opportunities as BI specialists in IT technical support and customer service support. Training in database design and administration may also present job opportunities in those areas.
Employment may be found in organizations of all sizes in both the public and private sectors.
Depending on the previous education and experience of the students, graduates may be positioned to move into managerial or other positions of authority and/or responsibility overseeing or collaborating with technically aware professionals in a business solutions delivery environment.
Learning Outcomes
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:
- Analyze and resolve complex and non-routine information technology problems, associated with Business Intelligence (BI) infrastructure, through critical thinking and the application of diagnostic tools, to support secure enterprise BI strategies.
- Install, configure, troubleshoot, customize, maintain and upgrade BI platforms.
- Apply knowledge of networking concepts to develop strategies to integrate and deploy proprietary BI platforms and architectures with existing consumer and open source applications.
- Provide efficient and effective communications and technical support to guide clients in a manner that promotes safe computing practices and reduces risk.
- Analyze, design, build, query, maintain and manage the data integrity of databases and data warehouses.
- Identify, analyze and document a client`s business needs and use BI platforms to generate reliable benchmarks and indicators that support business decision making and the corporate strategic plan.
- Create programs and customize scripts to support evaluated needs of a client`s customized software environment.
- Research and analyze legal and ethical issues to develop criteria surrounding the personal, professional and business use of BI in a business environment.
- Plan, implement and lead BI IT team projects using project management techniques and software.
- Identify and apply discipline-specific practices that contribute to the local and global community through social responsibility, economic commitment and environmental stewardship.
Courses
Programs at Algonquin College are delivered using a variety of instruction modes. Courses may be offered in the classroom or lab, entirely online, or in a hybrid mode which combines classroom sessions with online learning activities. *Co-op is a real-world job search process requiring students to apply, interview, and earn jobs rather than being placed by the College. In the term prior to the cooperative education (Co-op) Work Term, students are required to independently complete online modules that assist with resume and cover letter writing, and interview technique preparation. Students must actively conduct a self-directed job search and are responsible to secure approved program related paid co-op employment. Students compete for co-op positions alongside students from Algonquin and other Canadian and international colleges and universities. Algonquin College`s Co-op Office provides assistance in developing co-op opportunities and facilitates the overall process but does not guarantee that a student will obtain employment in a cooperative education (Co-op) Work Term. Co-op employment opportunities requiring relocation may be considered, and are subject to departmental approval with the understanding that all associated expenses are incurred by students e.g., travel, work permits/visa applications, accommodation, etc.
Cooperative education (Co-op) Work Terms are typically four months in duration and are completed during a term when students are currently not studying on campus. For details on study-work progressions for specific programs, please visit www.algonquincollege.com/coop.
Several courses can assist in the preparation for industry standards Oracle and IBM Cognos examinations (CST2102, CST2200, CST2202, CST2203, CST2204, CST2205, CST2206 and CST2207).
Program curriculum is reviewed annually to reflect evolving industry trends and standards in this information technology field.
Applicants should have intermediate computer skills, such as experience installing software, writing basic SQL queries, as well as understanding basic operating system and programming concepts and commands. Candidates without this background, that are otherwise from a relevant discipline and are confident in their ability to learn these skills, are also encouraged to apply.
