New York University
NYU has a main campus is located in Greenwich Village, which has historically been a hotspot for artists and musicians in downtown New York City. The university offers three degree programs related to music production through its Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development. Music technology students have access to NYU's state-of-the-art recording studios.
Bachelor of Music in Music Technology
This 128-credit program is designed to prepare students for careers in a variety of fields within music production and technology, including audio mastering, recording engineering and software development. In addition to taking several courses in recording and electronics technology, students take classes in aural comprehension, music theory and music history. They're also required to complete a music technology internship.
Program applicants must submit an audition package, as well as meet NYU's general admission requirements. This package includes a resume, a description of the student's background in music and music technology and a video recording of three performances.
Master of Music in Music Technology
Master's degree students can choose to specialize in film and multimedia scoring, acoustics and signal processing, game audio production or general music technology. The program consists of 45 credits, though many specific course requirements depend on a student's selected specialization area.
All students take core courses in advanced musical acoustics, digital signal theory and audio processing, as well as a cognate elective and a performance course. Upon entering the program, students take exams in music history and theory; before exiting the program, students are required to submit a thesis. In addition to the general university admission requirements, applicants must submit official GRE scores and complete an audition process.
Doctor of Philosophy in Music Technology
This program provides students with the knowledge and skills to work in university music teaching, audio computation or music-related research and development. A total of 48 credits beyond the master's degree are required to complete the program.
Students can choose to focus on digital signal processing, interactive music systems or film and multimedia scoring, among other concentrations. Required courses include computer science, mathematics and research methodology. Additionally, students must work as teaching assistants for at least one semester, pass an oral and written exam, and complete a dissertation.
To be admitted to the program, students must hold a relevant master's degree and submit GRE scores, three letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose and examples of their previous work in music technology.
LaGuardia Community College (CUNY)
Founded in 1971, LaGuardia Community College is part of the City University of New York's (CUNY) large network of institutions of higher learning. The college has received several awards over the last decade, including recognition from Excelencia in Education for the school's role in serving the needs of Latino and nontraditional students. Associate in Applied Science in Music Recording Technology
This career-focused, dual-admission and registration program provides students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in recording technology. In this 60-credit program, students must earn 33 of general education credits at LaGuardia and 27 credits at the Institute of Audio Research in Manhattan. Some of the topics covered include audio electronics, the business of music and music mixing. Graduates can seek music industry jobs or transfer to 4-year programs.
SUNY at Purchase College
Purchase College was established in 1967 and is a member of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The college's arts programs have a worldwide reputation, and the college itself has been given several awards for academic excellence and affordability. Music programs at Purchase College are offered through the Conservatory of Music.
Bachelor of Music in Studio Production
This bachelor's degree program is designed to prepare students to work in a variety of musical genres. Students complete hands-on experiences at a recording studio, group study sessions and in-class work. Areas of study include production and composition, studio technology and the business of music. Several production, composition and studio technology courses also are required. Additionally, students produce and perform two original projects prior to graduation.
In addition to the general college admission requirements, prospective students must complete a 2-step audition process, which included submitting an online recording and performing live on campus.
Other Schools
Queensborough Community College, another CUNY school, offers an associate's degree in music production at its campus in Queens, about 16 miles from downtown NYC. Mercy College, located about 25 miles from Manhattan, offers associate's and bachelor's degree programs in music industry and technology. These programs include coursework in music production.
