Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences

The Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences (FHSS) offers a broad range of high quality graduate and undergraduate programs and courses. The largest Faculty at Athabasca University, the FHSS offers one graduate and five undergraduate degrees, nine undergraduate certificates, two undergraduate diplomas, and two post-Baccalaureate diplomas, including the Master of Arts in Integrated Studies, the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Legislative Drafting, the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Heritage Resources Management, the three-year Bachelor of Arts (with thirteen concentrations), the four-year Bachelor of Arts (with thirteen majors), the Bachelor of Professional Arts, the Bachelor of General Studies, the Bachelor of Human Resources and Labour Relations, and the Bachelor of Health Administration. Courses managed and taught in the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences are also part of other credentials in other Faculties.

Our Faculty is comprised of the Centre for Humanities, the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies, and the Centre for Social Sciences. The Centre for Humanities provides students with learning opportunities in various disciplines including history, languages, literatures, philosophy, and religious studies. The Centre for Humanities is also the home of Athabasca University's Writer in Residence, an innovative and unique virtual residency that provides mentorship to emerging writers and builds communities of writers across Canada and around the world. In the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies students can engage in learning in areas such as communications, cultural, education, equity, labour, and gender studies. Learning experiences are available through the Centre for Social Sciences in areas that include anthropology, global studies, sociology, political studies, and psychology. The Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences also houses Athabasca University's Write Site, an on-line writing centre that develops and supports student writing across the University.

Research in the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences is wide ranging, covering areas from community transformation and consumerism to digital communications and virtual worlds. Many of our researchers are nationally and internationally regarded and their work is shared widely; you will find much of it showcased across our web pages.
