Who We Are
Asbestos.com is a website and advocacy group that helps the victims of asbestos exposure and their loved ones. We connect our visitors with the resources they need to understand and fight asbestos-related disease, all at no cost. We research the latest data about asbestos and asbestos-related diseases to ensure an accurate, up-to-date site, and we maintain relationships with doctors and cancer centers to promote patient access to cutting-edge treatment.
Our free services include: providing literature on asbestos and related diseases; providing access to our on-staff nurse; matching patients up with qualified doctors in their area; managing a support group for asbestos victims and their families; helping veterans receive VA benefits for asbestos diseases; educating the public about Social Security disability and legal options; and much more.
Asbestos.com is part of the mesothelioma community, which has a blend of for-profit and not-for-profit websites and companies occupying it. We are a for-profit company. The site is owned by Asbestos.com, LLC, based in Orlando and sponsored by The Peterson Firm, a Washington, D.C. law firm. We think we do good work, much like other for-profit companies: Walt Disney World, Starbucks, UPS and Whole Foods. We like the fact that we’re a business because we feel it gives us more opportunities to help people. Although we do understand the stigma that sometimes comes with a for-profit company, we are proud of the work we do and we trust the feedback of our users.
Patient Advocates
Our Patient Advocates specialize in advising mesothelioma patients, family members and caregivers. They can offer these resources to anyone who contacts us, and all of these resources are free.
Veterans make up a large percentage of people who come to Asbestos.com, and our Veterans Department has a special skill set just for them. Our Veterans Department excels at dealing with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and all of its paperwork.
Content Team
Our editors and writers take pride in dispensing the latest news, treatment information and clinical trial data involving asbestos diseases. We constantly talk to doctors about medical trends related to mesothelioma and asbestos-disease research.
We think one aspect of Asbestos.com sets us apart: We value the experiences of someone fortunate to survive. These survivors share their insights, and we pass these stories along. They resonate beyond the mesothelioma community.
Public Outreach
Our social media team works hard to let everyone in the mesothelioma community know about our ability to help families touched by this disease. We can be reached on Facebook, Google +, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest.
We talk to many mesothelioma patients, spouses and relatives, caregivers and disease specialists through our social media platforms. We’re happy to provide information to anyone in the community who needs help or just wants to know more about us and what we do.
Who Do We Help?
We want to help anyone affected by an asbestos-related disease. That includes someone who contracted a form of mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer or asbestosis. It also includes spouses who want help understanding these diseases or need assistance in finding help for a loved one. And it includes family members who want to help their loved one find doctors and treatment centers that can prolong life. Away from the office, we fundraise in multiple ways for various cancer charities, including Relay for Life and Movember.
What We Do
Our Patient Advocates travel to asbestos and mesothelioma conferences to meet with specialists and other advocates in the mesothelioma community. This helps us ensure that we know the latest treatment information and what doctors believe might be the next frontier in fighting asbestos diseases. Relationships with these specialists allow us to connect patients with the doctors who treat their form of mesothelioma.
We also offer a support group run by licensed counselor Dana Nolan, for patients and families who are dealing with mesothelioma, helping them adjust to the various emotions that a life-threatening disease brings about.
Our advocates make sure people who contact us get access to our Doctor Match Program and our Veterans Department, as well as our free informational literature and mesothelioma support wristbands. Doctor Match is unique to Asbestos.com: If patients need help finding a mesothelioma specialist, our advocates will help them locate one.
In addition, our advocates spend time finding money – sometimes grants, sometimes offers through hospitals – for patients who need it for treatment of their cancer. Our advocates also answer many health insurance coverage questions that patients have before and after treatment. They can also assess your situation and help you find an attorney to pursue a legal claim you might have.
Two specialists – Dr. Avi Lebenthal and Dr. Jacques Fontaine – share their treatment experiences in blog posts on Asbestos.com. Kasie Coleman writes about her mesothelioma diagnosis, treatment and survival process, while caregiver Lorraine Kember blogs about her experiences caring for her husband after he was diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Asbestos.com Scholarship
We also provide the Asbestos.com Scholarship to college students. Two students who submit the best essays about asbestos or mesothelioma are awarded the scholarship to help them with anything they might need in college, including tuition, books, fees or any other necessities
Financial Assistance
We assist those affected by asbestos diseases with their financial assistance options. Two primary ways of getting compensation for asbestos-related illnesses are securing veterans benefits (for those exposed to asbestos during their time in the military) and Social Security disability benefits (assuming Social Security retirement is not already being drawn).
We also recommend nationally recognized law firms specializing in asbestos diseases. Legal representation is not the first topic that comes up when we talk to people affected by mesothelioma, but it is a central component to the disease. Why? Because this disease is entirely preventable, and people who contract asbestos-related cancer deserve to know that someone is probably responsible for the deadly disease they now have – and that financial penalties can be attached to that liability. People with asbestos disease face a difficult prognosis. The only way to square that unfairness is to let a lawyer navigate the channels set up for compensation.
Asbestos.com does not sell the names, phone numbers or addresses of its visitors. In fact, no visitor information exchanges hands without the express consent of the customer.
The Peterson Firm and Legal Help
A decade ago, The Peterson Firm, our sponsor, began helping clients file asbestos trust fund claims and lawsuits related to asbestos cancer. It wasn’t long before the firm discovered that clients needed much more than legal help in getting compensated for a horrible wrong. They needed help staying alive, and they needed support.
Through Asbestos.com, the law firm set up The Mesothelioma Center, a patient advocate care center whose objective is to suggest treatment and assistance for anyone suffering from an asbestos-related disease.
All advocate services provided by The Mesothelioma Center are free. Advocates help many mesothelioma patients and family members. None are required to be clients of The Peterson Firm to receive that help. The Peterson Firm is located in Washington, D.C.
