State Requirements
- Basic Liability Coverage:Indiana requires bodily injury liability coverage of, at minimum, $25,000 per person and $50,000 per incident, and property damage liability coverage of at least $10,000 for each incident.
- Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage:The minimum coverage is $25,000 of uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage per person and $50,000 per accident, $10,000 of uninsured motorist property damage coverage per accident and $50,000 of underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage. ( While this is required in Indiana, you can reject this type of coverage in writing if you choose. )
Let’s look at additional ways to make sure you are covered:
Basic Liability Coverage
This is the most basic level of Indiana auto insurance. If you want to drive legally in this state, or any other state, you will need basic liability coverage. Liability insurance covers the medical bills and property damage for the other driver and his/her passengers if you are at fault for an accident. The repair costs and medical bills resulting from a collision often far exceed these amounts, though. Many drivers opt for additional liability coverage.
Comprehensive and Collision Coverage
If you want more than just basic liability coverage, you will want to look into comprehensive and collision. The collision coverage will take care of your repair costs and rental car charges following an accident, while the comprehensive coverage will also protect you in the case of fire, vandalism, theft, or windshield damage. Acceptance offers a range of deductible options, so you can choose the monthly payments that work for you.
Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage
As mentioned above, this is also a required type of Indiana auto insurance, but unlike basic liability, you can reject this type of coverage in writing if you so choose. This is not advisable, however, because many drivers are either uninsured or only carrying the bare minimum amount of coverage. If you want to make sure you're covered after an accident, regardless of the other driver's insurance status, be sure to add this to your Indiana auto insurance policy.
