MISSION:

The mission of the Orlando Tech Medical Laboratory Assisting Program is to prepare students to become nationally certified phlebotomists, ECG Aides, physician office Medical Laboratory Assistants and vital clinical laboratory assistants in hospitals and independent laboratories.

DESCRIPTION:

Training includes, but is not limited to phlebotomy techniques, electrocardiography techniques, laboratory safety, infection control, quality assurance and basic skills in waived testing in hematology, urinalysis, microbiology and clinical practice.ding an Information Session

UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS:

The State of Florida requires students to meet a basic skills requirement prior to program completion. The basic skills grade levels for this program are Mathematics 9, Language 11, and Reading 11

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER:

After completing this program, graduates take the following exams:
Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT), American Medical Technologists (AMT)
Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant (CMLA), American Medical Technologists (AMT)
Optional Exam(s)
Phlebotomy Technician (PBT), American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)

HSC0003: Basic Healthcare Worker (90 Hours)

• Demonstrate knowledge of the healthcare delivery system and health occupations


• Demonstrate comprehension and communication skills


• Demonstrate the ability to communicate and use interpersonal skills effectively


• Demonstrate legal and ethical responsibilities


• Demonstrate an understanding of and apply wellness and disease concepts

MEA0520: Phlebotomist (75 Hours)

• Demonstrate accepted professional, communication, and interpersonal skills


• Discuss phlebotomy in relation to the health care setting


• Identify the anatomic structure and function of body systems in relation to services performed by phlebotomist


• Recognize and identify collection reagents supplies, equipment and interfering chemical substances


• Demonstrate skills and knowledge necessary to perform phlebotomy


• Practice infection control following universal precautions


• Practice accepted procedures of transporting, accessioning and processing specimens


• Practice quality assurance and safety

MEA0560: Medical Laboratory Assistant (300 Hours)

• Identify the federal and state laws which serve to regulate the provision of laboratory services, including CLIA, Florida Statutes, and Florida Administrative Code


• Demonstrate a basic understanding of ICD and CPT coding Systems


• Demonstrate basic knowledge of microbiology; perform clinical laboratory "Waived Tests"


• Demonstrate basic knowledge of urinalysis, perform clinical laboratory "Waived Tests"


• Demonstrate basic knowledge of clinical chemistry, perform clinical laboratory "Waived Tests"


• Demonstrate basic knowledge of hematology, perform clinical laboratory "Waived Tests"


• Successfully complete learning experiences in the clinical setting
