Focused Online Graphic Design Training

This is career-focused education. You won’t spend time working through electives or irrelevant content designed to drag out the program and drive up costs. Your program is tailored around you and getting into a rewarding professional position, without spending a ton of time and money sitting in a classroom.

Throughout the year you will design many, many types of projects, including
  • magazines

  • movie posters

  • web pages

  • advertisements

  • illustrations

  • children’s books

  • album covers

  • postcards

  • newsletters

  • annual reports

  • travel brochures

  • book covers

  • calendars

  • greeting cards

  • infographics

  • logos

And more!

You are given plenty of choices in projects, in terms of choosing which “client” you’d like to work with, and even using your own favored businesses and causes for inspiration!

My expectations for this course were to learn the basics and get a general idea on how to use each program. What I got was so much more. I feel totally prepared to search for and acquire employment as a Graphic Designer. The teachers were very helpful and patient; they guided me through with support and encouragement. Not once did my questions go unanswered. The staff at CD-ED is wonderful, helpful, encouraging, and pleasant. I can’t say enough about their supportive enthusiasm. They want you to succeed and they will help you achieve your goal!

A New Way To Learn – 8 Key Graphic Design Principles to Become a Well Rounded and Skilled Designer

We have built an engaging, interesting, relevant, and FUN program for you! Our goal is to ensure you can easily take on the thought processes, philosophies, and business practices of a working graphic designer.

Below for some of the big-picture concepts you will be learning to add into your daily practice and working processes:

1.  Real-Life Simulation

For much of this program, you will be in a mock simulation of working for a graphic design firm – assignments are in the language you would find from a boss, and your instructors give feedback the same way.

You will first be given a project as part of an interview with a mock company, then hired as a junior graphic designer; eventually you are “promoted” to a senior graphic designer, and finally “quit” that job to become immersed in a freelance simulation instead.  Practicing in a simulated environment gives you the skills and confidence in a variety of graphic design projects and exposure to the many ways graphic design is employed in business.

2.  Creativity

Not everyone feels creative at first – but this program will teach you how to become creative! You’ll explore creativity techniques for a design professional, with a focus on being creative on demand. The creativity exercises will be present throughout the entire program so that by the end, you will be fully confident in your ability to tackle any design project.

3.  Time Management, Organization, & Deadlines

In an industry which is notorious for not just fierce deadlines, but multiple projects with overlapping deadlines, it’s important to be able to manage your time and productivity properly. So, we’ve made it a priority in this program that you are given the tools necessary to successfully be creative within a time sensitive schedule. You will explore many strategies, and incorporate the ones that work best for YOU.

In particular, good graphic designers don’t “wing it” – they create Project Plans and follow through, documenting each step. For most assignments, you will create, follow, and submit a Project Plan that helps you decide what a client needs, brainstorm ways to fulfill that need, and create the artwork – all on schedule.

4.  Communication & Career Skills

Talking with clients is always the first step of any design process. You need to be able to understand the message the client is trying to get across – which can mean artfully extracting information from a client. We’ll help you become comfortable with not only that step, but also how to plan, organize, and execute professional messages between you and your client, and your client and THEIR clients.

We will give you the necessary communication skills to participate in business environments such as the ability to represent yourself in a presentation or a written resume.

And – something many programs overlook – you’ll learn to recognize difficult customer situations and create effective strategies in dealing with them.

5.  Software

The software section of the program gives you the essential tools needed to increase workflow and produce usable, attractive graphics while learning:

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe InDesign

Adobe Illustrator

6.  Design Theory

Throughout the whole year you will be given many opportunities to understand and implement the theories and rules of design, rendering you highly capable of creating visually pleasing layouts.

7.  Design Specialties

Graphic design encompasses many variations. We give you the most common, the most foundational skills to help you adapt to the one that appeals the most to you in your career!
  • Typography

  • Identity Design

  • Print Design

  • Presentation Design

  • Web Design

8.  Portfolio

There’s nothing that will help get you hired – or win you new clients – as well as a thorough, beautiful portfolio of your existing design work. Throughout the entire program, your projects are critiqued and, with the help of instructor feedback, refined to create a series of pieces unique to YOU for a professional presentation of your capabilities. Then, you are provided with the skills to create a strong, striking portfolio which can be presented digitally, in print, and on the web. The portfolio is geared towards earning you employment opportunities in a firm or as a freelance designer.

About Distance Education & Learning Online

CD-ED’s online graphic design program includes all the theory and practical training of traditional learning, without the set schedule, costly commute or rigid lesson plans of traditional learning.

But it’s not right for everyone.

Online Learning requires discipline and time management skills. We recommend students be able to devote 25 hours per week to their program.

The online classroom works very well, and I haven’t had any problems with the lesson submissions. I really commend the designers of this online classroom for a very good, user friendly design. I have done other online courses where the logging in and out of various portals and sites was a nightmare and consumed more time than doing the course. There is a human touch here at CD-ED that is not present at other distance education providers.
