At about 7:30 a.m., a minivan and a privately owned street sweeper collided, causing the minivan to immediately catch fire with a passenger inside, said Sgt. Vince Lewis, a Phoenix police spokesman.
Crews arrived and extinguished the fire but found the passenger dead, he said.
The driver of the minivan, Lewis said, was taken to a nearby hospital.
Phoenix fire Capt. Joe Meier had initially reported that one person arrived at the hospital in critical condition, while another person refused medical care.
The crash shut down 32nd Street while investigators were at the scene Sunday morning. Motorists were advised to take alternate routes.
No other details were immediately available.
