Administrative Internship Program Overview

The UCLA Administrative Internship is an exciting twelve-week program each summer designed to provide qualified young leaders with exposure and project experience in a busy academic medical center. As an Intern, you will attend regular meetings with senior leaders and project sponsors, and be involved in a variety of enterprise-wide projects and initiatives.

The Internship is project-based and action-oriented. You will be encouraged to learn about all aspects of health care delivery. With our flexible structure, you can tailor your experiences around specific areas of interest in addition to the needs of the organization. Each project will have a sponsor who will work with you on project definition, execution, and dissemination of results. At the end of the program, Interns have the opportunity to present their projects to senior leaders in the Health System. Potential projects will involve many different services, departments, and functions across a variety of areas. Some of the past projects that Interns have worked on include:
  • Created workforce planning and recruitment strategy with Human Resources

  • Developed business plan for Oncology service line growth

  • Lean project to improve patient satisfaction and customer service in ambulatory clinic

  • Identified opportunities for Transplant Services to accommodate additional growth

  • Emergency Preparedness planning for strikes and related events; worked in Command Center for various events

  • Developed business case for different Innovation Institute initiatives, including telemedicine projects

  • Participated in planning for impacts of Health Care Reform

  • Participated in hospital transition planning and created sequence for patient move day

  • Supported Command Center during Joint Commission visits and participated in follow-up projects

  • Worked on creation and implementation of Service Excellence model with various departments across the Health System

  • Participated in revenue cycle enhancements for Nursing departments

  • Created and facilitated leadership development retreat for leaders focusing on Service Excellence


As a UCLA Administrative Intern, you will have an exceptional opportunity to gain both the knowledge and experience necessary to meet the challenges facing today's health care industry. Johnese Spisso, the President and CEO of UCLA Health and the UCLA Hospitals and Clinics, is the primary preceptor for the Internship

At the conclusion of your journey at UCLA, you will have gained marketable core competencies in at least the following four areas:
  1. Gain understanding of Hospital Operations and Administration

  2. Manage projects independently and facilitate interdisciplinary teams

  3. Develop mentoring relationships with Senior Leaders

  4. Improve professionalism, leadership skills, and communication
