Animals in The Alpine

There are many animals living and adapting to their environment everyday due to climate, plants, landforms, and other animals that they can eat or that might eat them.

PIKA

These adorable mammals are found in the alpine tundra where they have plenty of food for herbivores such as grass, fruits, leaves, flowers, and roots. Pikas are known for storing food for the winter and their fur which slightly changes color from season to season. In the picture below, the pika can easily blend in with its surroundings because of how small, brown and plump they are.

MARMOTS

These furry friends that live in the alpine tundra hibernate all through the winter due to the fact that they can’t endure the harsh, cold weather. They’re herbivores so their diet strictly consists of greens, vegetation, and fruits. Marmots are known for their loud whistle to communicate with fellow creatures.

CLARK'S NUTCRACKER

This herbivore lives in the alpine tundra where it eats lots of seeds. This animal is known as Clark's Nutcracker. It's special adaptation is it's long and sharp beak allowing it to easily retrieve seeds from pine cones.

CARIBOU

These large animals will eat basically anything including small mammals or berries. The black, brown, gray, or white fur helps it blend into its surroundings in an alpine tundra.

MOUNTAIN GOAT

They are herbivores so in alpine tundras, they can find grass, sedge, herbs, shrubs, ferns, mosses and lichen to eat. Mountain goats are born with special padding to cushion their hooves. They are also slip resistant for when they jump from mountain to mountain.
