Doctor of Education (EdD)

We are currently accepting applications for AY 2018-2019. The deadline for completing the online application form is December 31. All supporting documentation must be submitted by close of business on January 15, 2018.

To address the changing landscape of education in the 21st century, the School of Education has been a pioneer in establishing an online Doctor of Education (EdD) program. The program, designed to prepare an exceptional corps of practitioner-scholars, both nationally and internationally, sets the bar for transformational leadership in education through scholarship, professional development and networking with educational leaders and researchers representing a variety of backgrounds and interests. Online delivery allows candidates to address a Problem of Practice particular to the educational environment they occupy, wherever they are in the world.

In its fifth year, the EdD program graduated a class in 2017, and welcomes students representing countries of China, Azerbaijan, Rwanda, Singapore, South Korea, Canada and Brazil, as well as urban and rural settings from across the United States. This unique program extends our school’s global reach and promotes interdisciplinary growth, which is a hallmark of a Johns Hopkins University education.

As a competitive and limited admissions doctoral program, the graduates set a high standard for transformational leadership in education, apply evidence-based practices to improve educational outcomes and meet the vast challenges associated with improving learning outcomes in both public and private educational environments. They support the continued creation of new areas of research, promote an increase in the utilization of research findings in professional practice and contribute to the public discourse and policy.

The Ed.D. program includes specialization areas. Applicants must select one of the specialization areas as the focus of their program. For the 2018-2019 cohort, the areas of specialization are:

Entrepreneurial Leadership in Education
Mind, Brain & Teaching
Urban Leadership

Since the Ed.D. program is designed specifically for the practicing educator, the program is a part-time program and GREs will not be required for admission to the program. However, the coursework is rigorous and candidate selection is highly competitive. Please refer to the EdD Student Handbook for greater detail related to all aspects of the program.
