School of Professional Development

Welcome to the Higher Education Administration (HEA) program!

Our mission is to provide the academic preparation and credentials necessary to build the expertise and advance the careers of college and university professionals. The curriculum aligns ACPA and NASPA professional competencies, combining aspects of theory and practice within the changing landscape of American higher education. The HEA program is suitable for individuals who currently work in or wish to work in community colleges, 4-year colleges and universities—both public and private—as well as government agencies that address higher education planning and regulation.  Please explore our website to learn more details about our program options and opportunities.

Flexible Scheduling: On-campus, Fully Online, or In Combination

To meet the demands of working professionals, courses are offered weeknights on-campus or completely online. Students may choose to combine both face-to-face and online courses in our traditional Higher Education Administration (HEA) program, or they may apply to the HEA online program and take all of their courses via Blackboard. Online students are never required to come to campus. Learn more about e-learning at the School of Professional Development .

A Diverse Student Body

There are approximately 250 students matriculated in our Higher Education Administration program.  Some students apply directly after earning their undergraduate degree.  Some work full-time, while others work part-time or have graduate employment positions at Stony Brook or other campuses - and elect to take anywhere from 3-12 credits per semester.  Our students come from a variety of institutions — from small private colleges to large state universities — and have varied experiences, with some currently working in the higher education field in areas such as student affairs, residence life, admissions, advancement, financial aid and administration.  One of the benefits of our online courses is that our students have the opportunity to interact with and learn from their peers outside of their region, allowing them to build a broad network of professional contacts that will serve them even after graduation.
