University of Wisconsin (Consortium)

Introduction

The University of Wisconsin, one of the largest public university systems, has offered distance education for the last 15 years. The Online MBA Consortium draws from faculty resources and course availability from four campuses: UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Parkside.

The online MBA program typically requires 30 credit hours, 17 required core or module credits and 13 credits of electives. Applicants need not have an undergraduate degree in business, but students who have a non-business undergraduate degree are required to complete up to 18 foundation courses through the consortium or through another AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accredited university. Students who are not required to take foundation courses typically finish the program in 24 months.

Accreditation

All four business schools are accredited by the AACSB, a distinction given to only about 5 percent of the world’s business schools. All four schools that comprise the University of Wisconsin Consortium are institutionally accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission.

Academics

The curriculum features four academic modules, including Strategies for Managing Ongoing Operations, Developing New Products and Services, Managing Strategically in a Global Environment, and Focusing on the Future (which integrates curriculum on information technology, human resources and organizational change practices). An additional mini-module focuses on leadership, and elective courses must be taken within each module.

Each module is taught by a team of three to four graduate faculty members. The combination of the modules and electives creates a general, interdisciplinary MBA program without specializations. Students may use electives to create a concentration that suits their goals.

In this online MBA program, students won’t have to compete for interaction time with the instructor. Some online programs have unlimited online class enrollment, but each UW class typically has no more than 25 to 30 students. UW faculty are prepared for the differences between online and traditional face-to-face learning. Each faculty member must complete an online teaching course before leading any online class.

Admissions

The UW Consortium has rolling admissions, and the requirements for online MBA applicants include:
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university

  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75

  • GMAT or GRE test scores (median score is 518)

  • $56 nonrefundable application fee paid electronically

  • Electronic or paper application

  • Official undergraduate transcripts sent directly from each institution to the Eau Claire Office of Admissions

Tuition and Financial Aid

The consortium charges the same amount of tuition for in-state and out-of-state students. Tuition for the foundation prerequisites is $650 per credit hour, and tuition for the MBA program is $675 per credit hour. Based on a 30-credit hour tuition (excluding foundation courses), the program’s total cost estimate is $20,250.

Students taking at least five credits during the fall or spring are eligible to apply for financial aid through the Eau Claire Office of Financial Aid. For need-based aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Resources

Online MBA students have full access to library resources at all four campuses, career services and in-person networking events, and they are given the option to participate in the traditional commencement ceremony. Online MBA students are also eligible to participate in study abroad trips.
