Ball State University offers an amazing 14 masters in education programs online, including the most popular options in primary education, secondary education, special education, and curriculum & educational technology. 17 certificates classes as well as 10 licensure classes are available for educators online as well. Besides flexibility and the ability to take a wide variety of programs, Ball State is also the 4th most affordable school on our list with graduate per credit hour costs of $315 for Indiana residents, and $530 for non-residents. The accompanying school of education at Ball State is currently ranked 86th by US News

2. Western Governor’s University

Fourteen education-related masters are available from Western Governor’s, including instructional design, science education, math education, and special education. Western Governor’s is unique in both its flexibility and pricing, not focusing on classes but rather on “competency units.” Students are billed a flat rate of $2890 per six-month term, and are allowed to complete as many classes as they can in this amount of time. While slower workers could extend the program and thus costs, this is unique in pricing arrangements in our rankings, and has the potential to make for a very affordable degree

3. American College of Education


The American College of Education offers two M.A. programs in elementary and secondary teaching online, as well as a larger number of masters in education degrees, including: curriculum and instructional design, educational technology, and bilingual education. The American College of Education also offers a number of courses stepping a student toward licensure in a given subject, as well as a number of graduate level certificates. Tuition is $215 per credit hour for masters in education programs, the lowest tuition rate in our rankings. This renders all of their masters programs at less than $8,000. Rates are even lower for members of the armed services or their spouses.

4. Grand Canyon University


Grand Canyon University was founded in 1949 as a private, Christian teachers college. Today they offer 18 M.A.’s and Masters in education programs online, including: elementary, secondary, special education, curriculum & instruction, and a focus on Autism spectrum disorders. Learning is asynchronous at Grand Canyon University, and courses taken one at a time, allowing for students to mold their coursework around their work and lives. Most courses of study are offered either as evening or online courses, and as programs that lead to licensure or not (if you’re a teacher who is already licensed). Graduate education classes cost $510 per credit hour, the 6th most affordable rate in our rankings, with continuing education courses available at $150 per credit hour

Arizona State University are offered through the top ranked Mary Lou Fulton Teacher’s College, currently ranked 18th for education departments in the nation by US News. Six masters in education programs are available online, including a unique program focusing on curriculum & instruction of gifted students. 5 graduate level certificates are also available through the college. Tuition is currently $545 per credit hour, ranking Arizona State 11th for affordability in our rankings. For teachers who need certification, a few credit hours may be added to existing programs

6. Capella University


Capella University offers 12 concentrations for their M.S. in education online program. Unique offerings include concentrations in early childhood education, integrative studies, and training & performance improvement. Courses are 10 weeks long, and Capella allows students to take a range of course loads per quarter, increasing flexibility for the program. Tuition for Capella University’s M.S. in K-12 Education is currently $436 per credit hour, ranking the program as the 6th most affordable in our rankings

7. Oregon State University


Oregon State University offers a masters in education for K-12 teachers, an M.S. in science and mathematics education, as well as a masters in counseling in schools. The counseling degree does require two short classes to be attended on campus, and thus is technically a blended program, but all other programs are entirely online. Students may start in any term, and aren’t tied to a cohort (they can take classes at paces at which they please). 45 credit hours are needed to graduate, with a tuition rate of $512 per credit hour, or the 8th most affordable school in our rankings. Oregon State University’s education school is currently ranked 106th in the nation by US News.

8. University of New England


The University of New England offers 6 M.S. in education programs online, as well as 7 certificates of advanced study in education. Unique masters level programs include focuses on career and technical education, and inclusion education. Scheduling is flexible at the University of New England, with many programs completable in less than 2 years. Though the program may be extended for longer if that suits your individual needs. University of New England costs $510 per credit hour, ranking the program as the 6th most affordable in our rankings

9. Texas A&M


Texas A&M offers distance learning masters degrees in twelve education-centered topics, including programs on adult education, bilingual education, public school administration, and a number of curriculum and instruction centred tracks. Most programs directly mirror their traditional counterparts, and include research, coursework, as well as a practicum. Tuition is currently $546 per credit hour (ranked twelfth as far as affordability in our rankings), with many programs requiring 36 credit hours in order to graduate

10. North Carolina State University

12. University of San Diego


The University of San Diego offers a Master of Education online program with three concentrations: STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), literacy & digital learning, and universal design for education & inclusive learning. Programs are meant to be completed in 20 months, and are designed for experienced K-12 educators. Currently, tuition is $699 per credit hour for Masters in Education programs, making the University of San Diego the 22nd most affordable program in our rankings. San Diego’s education program is currently ranked 86th in the nation by US News.

13. Liberty University


Liberty University offers 15 concentrations for their online masters in education programs, 4 concentrations for their online M.S. in education programs, and 4 graduate level education-centered certificates. Unique offerings include Masters in teaching and learning with a focus on English, history, and leadership. For certificates, educational technology & online instruction, and middle grades are unique offerings. Tuition for Liberty University programs is currently $565 per credit hour, ranking the program as the 16th most affordable school in our rankings.

14. Concordia University


Concordia University offers a Masters in Education degree with six specializations, as well as an accelerated one-year masters program. Unique specializations include a general and a more advanced masters in special education (in which students can delve into particular types of special needs children), as well as a masters in career & technical education. The second offers three tracks, one in which only a masters is attained, a second in which licensure in special education is attained, and a third where an advanced licensure in special education is attained. Tuition at Purdue is currently $329 for in-state residents, and $650 for out-of-state, the average of which places Purdue as the 3rd most affordable school in our rankings

16. University of Cincinnati


The University of Cincinnati currently offers 9 specializations for their online masters in education degrees, as well as 5 online graduate certifications. Unique offerings include certificates in instruction of gifted, talented, and creative students, and a Master of Education with a focus on teacher leadership. Currently tuition is $710 per credit hour, ranking University of Cincinnati as the 23rd most affordable school in our rankings. Cincinnati’s education program is currently ranked 62nd in the nation by US News.

17. Regent University


Regent University is a Christian, private institution offering 12 Masters in education tracks online. Unique offerings include a masters in Christian School Administration, a masters with an individualized instruction plan, and a masters with an individualized instruction plan and a focus on educational therapy. Currently tuition for Regent’s masters in education programs is $575 per credit hour, ranking the program as the 19th most affordable in our rankings. Regent is ranked by US News, but their rank score is not published.

18. University of Southern California – Rossier


USC Rossier School of Education currently offers 3 masters in education programs online,as well as 2 M.A. programs in education,a special education credential, and a gifted education certificate. The M.A. in Teaching route is perhaps the most versatile, with concentrations in multiple subject teaching (elementary), secondary English, secondary mathematics, secondary science, and secondary social science. USC Rossier’s online programs currently cost an average of $1636 per credit hour for part time, ranking the school as one of the most expensive in our rankings. You’re paying for something special, however, with USC Rossier ranked as the 18th best education program in the nation by US News.

19. North Central University


North Central University offers master of education degree that is primarily online except for practicum, internship, and supervised clinical education which occurs in the community in which students live. The degree program has a massive array of specializations. Specializations include adult learning and workforce education, athletic coaching, corporate wellness, curriculum and teaching, early childhood education, educational leadership, e-learning, English as a second language, general education, global training and development, instructional leadership, international education, leadership in higher education, organizational leadership, PK-12 principal leadership, special education, sports management, and two accelerated programs in education leadership as well as leadership in higher ed. Northcentral University is regionally accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).

20. University of Massachusetts


UMass Online currently currently offers 11 variations of their online Masters in Education, including three related to vision studies, science education, instructional design, school counseling, three in curriculum and instruction, educational administration, and reading and language. Five certification programs are also available, requiring between 12 and 28 graduate level credit hours to complete. The current estimated per-credit hour cost for the program is $490, making the program the 6th most affordable of those surveyed. UMass Online is comprised of a number of University of Massachussets campuses, and thus not provided a single ranking by US News, but a number of locations are nationally ranked.

21. Michigan State University


Michigan State University offers 10 fully-online education-centered masters programs, a number of which are highly ranked in their given subspecialties. Programs include masters in health professions education, higher, adult and lifelong education, K-12 educational administration, kinesiology, M.A. in education, M.A. in educational technology, M.A. in teaching and curriculum, rehabilitation counseling, special education, and student affairs administration. The estimated per-credit hour cost for masters in education programs at Michigan State University is $990.50, making the program the 30th most affordable of surveyed programs. Michigan State University is currently the 85th ranked national university according to US News

22. Queens University of Charlotte


Queens University of Charlotte only offers a single online M.A. in education, but it’s one of the most affordable programs of those we surveyed. The program is a M.A. in educational leadership, with an estimated per credit hour tuition rate of $382 (the second most affordable of programs surveyed). The program is 33 credit hours in length, and helps to prepare students to take on leadership roles in primary and secondary schools.

23. University of Florida


The University of Florida offers four fully-online masters programs through their College of Education, including masters in educational leadership, curriculum & instruction: teacher leadership for school improvement, curriculum & instruction: education technology, and special education. The estimated cost per credit hour for the programs is $852 per credit hour, making the program the 28th most affordable of those surveyed. The University of Florida is currently the 48th ranked national university according to US News.

24. Drexel University


Drexel University offers 10 masters degrees in education, including masters in science programs in special education, mathematics learning and teaching, human resource development, learning technologies, teaching, learning and curriculum: advanced teaching track, teaching, learning and curriculum: teacher certification track (both in PreK-4 and secondary education), higher education, and global and international education. Current estimated per credit hour costs for the program are $787, making the program the 26th most affordable of those surveyed. Drexel University is currently the 95th ranked national university according to US News.

25. University of Maryland University College


The University of Maryland University College is a well-recognized leader in online education, offering four online masters degrees in education: distance education and e-learning, instructional technology, learning design and technology, and teaching. Degrees offered average $558 per credit hour, making the program the 14th most affordable of programs surveyed. Education masters programs range from 30-36 credit hours, with a number of transfer credits allowed in each type of educational program. Another way to decrease time until graduation is with a number of “fast track” options that allow students to save a number of credits by lowering the number of required courses in disciplines in which students have achieved an undergraduate minor (for some degrees). This option is available for students with undergraduate majors in the social sciences, computer science, history, and English. Some masters in education degrees from UMUC also allow students to specialize. All programs are offered exclusively online.
