Educational Specialist Degree

General Degree Information

The primary emphasis in an Ed.S. program is placed on the development of the competencies needed for a specific type of professional specialization. All credits in the program must contribute to the unity and the stated objective of the total program.

All work for the degree, including transferred credit, must be completed duringthe seven years immediately preceding the date on which the degree is awarded.

Transfer of Credit: All courses transferred in to any specialist program must directly relate to the degree being sought. Acceptance of transfer of credit requires approval of the student’s supervisory committee and the Dean of the Graduate School.

Courses and Credits: No courses numbered 1000-2999 may be used as any part of the graduate degree requirements. Courses numbers 3000-4999 MAY be used for MINOR credit when taken as part of an approved graduate program. A minor cannot be in the same department as a student’s major. Full-time students not on a graduate assistantship must register for a minimum of 12 credits. The maximum credits is 18 but is not recommended.

Minimal Requirements for Ed.S. Degree

All educational specialist (Ed.S.) student must meet the following minimal requirements:

1. Successfully complete a minimum of 72 credits beyond the bachelor’s degree ora minimum of 36 credits beyond the master’s degree.


2. Minimum of 3 hours of research methods


3. Minimum of 9 hours in Curriculum and/or Foundations graduate seminars


4. An area of specialization with at least 12-19 hours in the areas


5. Minimum of 5 credit hours of Supervised Research (EDG 6910)


6. Successfully complete a written and oral examination.


7. A thesis is not required; however, each program will include continuing attention to a research component to the professional role for which the student is preparing.
