California is a unique state for motorcyclists due to its lane splitting law. Lane splitting refers to the practice of riding a motorcycle between lanes of traffic, in order for the motorcyclist to pass slower-moving traffic. Although technically legal in California, it may be risky for motorcyclists. New legislation has been introduced to regulate more closely how lane splitting is done. As a general rule, the standard recommendation is go no more than 10 MPH than adjacent traffic in order to be safe. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), however, warns against sharing lanes altogether. If motorcyclists split lanes unsafely, they can be ticketed.

In California, all riders must wear a D.O.T. certified helmet. The state also requires motorcyclists to have EPA-compliant exhaust systems on their model year 2011 and newer motorcycles.

California motorcycle applicants under 21 years of age are required to complete a Basic Rider Course before they receive a motorcycle instruction permit. Motorcycle applicants 21 years of age and older are encouraged to take a motorcycle rider course but is not required. Please see the California DMV website for the most recent motorcycle laws in CA. Motorcycle Laws are constantly changing and the CA DMV website would be your most up-to-date source.
